The James Island Presbyterian Church provides a variety of mission and service
opportunities throughout the year.
Examples of local mission activities include the Meals on Wheels program that uses
volunteers to serve a noon meal, Mondays-Fridays, for homebound persons living on
James Island or serving as a host for visiting work groups staying in our Mission House.
There are also monthly service projects such as preparing and serving the evening meal
for guests at the Charleston Family Shelter or bringing breakfast foods to guests staying
at the Ronald McDonald House.
Examples of seasonal volunteer opportunities include working with migrant farm workers
and their families living on John’s Island during the planting and harvest months, helping
to build a Habitat for Humanity home on John’s Island, helping to assemble a water
filtration system with Water Missions International, tutoring elementary-age children in
our after school program, reading to children in our child care center or helping to
supervise children in our summer day camp programs.
Every-other-year we plan a mission trip to Merida, Yucatan, Mexico where volunteers
conduct week-long Vacation Bible Schools and help in a renovation or construction
project with the Corpus Christi Presbyterian Church.
Members of the James Island Presbyterian Church occasionally have opportunities to join
a mission or service trip sponsored by another church or organization. Scholarship funds
are available to enable members to participate in these trips. Examples of such mission
trips attended by members of our congregation include: medical and dental teams
working at rural clinics in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Habitat for Humanity home building
projects in Ghana, Africa: assisted living facility construction project in Cali, South
America; dental teams serving in Quito, Ecuador; home repair projects in Roatan,
Honduras.
